Happy Mother's Day to all the Mother's I know. Last year, when I was surfing the web for some preemie mom support I found something I wanted to share.
According to Erma this is how preemie moms are chosen. I believe her.
The Special Mother
-Adapted from
Erma Bombeck
Motherhood The Second Oldest Profession
Most women become mothers by accident, some by choice, a few by social pressures and a couple by habit. This year thousands of mothers will give birth to a premature baby. Did you ever wonder how mothers of preemies are chosen?
Somehow, I visualize God hovering over Earth selecting His instruments for propagation with great care and deliberation. As He observes, He instructs His angels to make notes in a giant ledger.
“Armstrong, Beth, son. Patron saint, Matthew.
“Forest, Majorie, daughter. Patron saint, Ceceila.
“Rutledge, Carrie, twins. Patron saint... give her Gerard. He’s used to profanity.
Finally, He passes a name to an angel and smiles, “Give her a premature baby.”
The angel is curious. “Why this one, God? She’s so happy.”
“Exactly, “ smiles God. “Could I give a premature baby a mother who does not know laughter? That would be cruel.”
“But does she have patience?” asks the angel.
“I don’t want her to have too much patience, or she will drown in a sea of self-pity and despair. Once the shock and resentment wear off, she’ll handle it.
“I watched her today. She has that sense of self and independence that are so rare and so necessary in a mother. You see, the child I’m going to give her has his own world. She has to make it live in her world and that’s not going to be easy.”
“But, Lord, I don’t think she even believes in you.”
God smiles, “No matter, I can fix that. This one is perfect. She has just enough selfishness.”
The angel gasps, “Selfishness? Is that a virtue?”
God nods. “If she can’t separate herself from the child occasionally, she’ll never survive. Yes, here is a woman whom I will bless with a child who comes in a less than perfect way. She doesn’t realize it yet, but she is to be envied.
“She will never take for granted a spoken word. She will never consider a step ordinary. When her child says ‘Mommy’ for the first time, she will be witness to a miracle and know it. When her child sees green grass or fall colors with perfect vision she will know that it is nothing less than amazing. When she describes a tree or a sunset to her blind child, she will see it as few people ever see my creations.
“I will permit her to see clearly the things I see - ignorance, cruelty, prejudice - and allow her to rise above them. She will never be alone. I will be at her side every minute of every day of her life because she is doing my work as surely as she is here by my side.”
“And what about her patron saint?” asks the angel, the pen poised in mid-air.
God smiles. “A mirror will suffice.”
Enjoy this day and every day on this note:
There are two ways to live your life.
One is as though nothing is a miracle.
The other is as if everything is.

East coast trip & Much more
Arrival of spring has brought many new experiences our way including more play dates, bike rides, trips to the beach, and travel. Eric has been making friends and now has a frequent flyer number.
Eric is full of energy - he is running, not walking, from room to room chasing his BA (short for balloon) as we speak.
Here is in the park enjoying tunes & a paddle boat ride.

Speaking of speaking, we were told at Eric's follow-up clinic this past march that he was speech-delayed. We have zero concern over this because he understands everything including the Spanish Maria speaks to him in. His first word was bye, accompanied by a wave. His second word was baby. He now says bu (short for bus), and eeeze (for cheese). I am pretty sure he said all done yesterday.
Once April came we didn't waste a second and headed east to Boston visit the DelloIacono family where Eric got to visit with his Great Papa (94) and Great Nana (90), Great Auntie J and his cousins. Grandpa Ralph & Gram Jeannie also made the trip to Bean-town to celebrate Grandpa Ralph's b-day with the family.

An outing at our local China Beach

Biking in Golden Gate Park

Other news, Mom (me) had her first overnights away from the boys. Work took me all the way to New York City where I made sure to have some fun and see good friends. Dad & Eric did well with the help of Maria and kept myself so busy that I barely had time to miss them.
What is good about all of this? It is all normal, which means that everyone is healthy and doing well. These trips have now been added the list of "big steps" for all if us.
With all this going on you may now understand why it has been so long since our lasting posting.

Hitting the slopes for the first time
Playing in the snow is one Mom and Dad's favorite past times and Eric was as eager to hit the slopes as we were. He even got to see snow fall for the first time and had a prime condo location right on the ski run where he good see all the snow related action: skiers whizzing buy, people waving on the chair lift, and the snow plow all right outside our door.
This location, courtesy of the Clif Company ski weekend, was also much appreciated by Mom and Dad because it made maximizing ski time very simple.
Every time he saw the Gondola he would exclaim "eeeh, eeh" and give his signature hand gesture as if to say "taa daaa". He even got to ride in the Gonodola on the way to the Clif dinner at mid-mountain.
His curious face is him trying to figure the gondola-ride-thing out. "What do you mean we get in it?" Not quite sure what to make it yet. He had a great time at the mid mountain party with all his clif buddies.
He wasn't thrilled about wearing a snow suite and snow boots but, once he got outside he recognized a purpose, or just forgot.
He is a natural in the snow and managed to walk down the ski run in snow boots 2 sizes too big and was very attracted to ski gear.
I am sure if they made gear his size he would insist we take him skiing.
Thanks to Clif Bar for such a great weekend and incredible new experience.

Walking, talking, following Grandpa
The hallway leading to and from the laundry room and Grandma and Grandpa Thies's house is Eric's favorite corridor in the whole house because it leads to his favorite room, the laundry room. Never mind the gorgeous view of Lake Wildwood with boats, ducks, and deer. The laundry room it is.
Here is Eric trying to get Grandpa to turn around and WALK back to the room where his clothes get clean.

Eric & Maria
Every morning Eric and Maria spend a good amount of time on the couch looking out the window at all the action. From the window Eric can see the California 1 bus line go by. On Tuesday and Thursday they await the street cleaner. Wednesday morning is full of excitement with the garbage, compost, and recycle pick up.
There used to be the added bonus of watching the neighborhood eccentric, Cookie, attempt to move her beater car from one side of the street to the other on street cleaning day. This was a good hour of entertainment. Cookie's car hardly ran, had a constant flat tire, and was held together with duck tape. Alas, Cookie moved and her car must have made its way to her new street, or the city decided to remove it on grounds of it being an "eye sore".

Maria is wonderful with Eric and he has so much fun on their days together. We are lucky to have found her. She can even get him to wear his baseball hat. Eric gets so excited when Maria comes in the morning that he squeals and waves his hands until he gets to give her a big hug.

Spencer and Eric have found time for few play dates. Spencer loves pulling all the toys out of the polka dot bin and is full of things to say. He can even say Eric. Our favorite word is the one nobody knows what he means, "ah be-baa". I also love his word for cracker which sounds more like a duck, but by gosh Spencer means he wants a cracker.

Completely belated birthday blog wishes
Cousin Sam turn the big 3 February 3 and cousin Maylen turned 1 on February 9! Cousin Eric and Auntie Tara wished them Happy Birthday from afar due to few runny noses, but Uncle Aaron was there to represent. Here is a little footage straight from the party people.
Eric loves his cousins. Grandma Linda has a picture of Maylen and Sam in a bedroom at her house and Eric always seems to find it and gives cousin Sam a kiss and then one to cousin Maylen.

Visitors
FYI
In the words of Yoda, try and try again I have and not has the Ba Bib video been able to re-post. Time I have not.
Moving on. Over the month of January we had some fun visits and an almost-vist to Tahoe.
My goods friends from Delaware continued their west coast trek up the California coast so the could meet Eric. Happy belated birthday Dani V.
Eric loves to entertain and had a great time with his new friends.

He adored Shane and watched his every move. Eric clearly looked up to Shane and sought his cheers and approval for his moves. I think they must have bonded over their hair - curls, curls, and more curls.

Our trip to Tahoe with the Browns was an almost-trip as we anxiously awaited relief from the nasty stomach virus that rocked through the three of us. Miraculously and thankfully, Maria didn't get it. She was a trooper with double diaper changes for Eric and mom and dad unable to get out of bed. Thank you Maria.
Instead of a trip to Tahoe, once we all felt much better, the Browns came over for an early evening of pizza and letting the boys play. Eric was beside himself with excitement over a playmate this rainy day. Spencer investigate every toy and Eric pulled out one after the other and offered a tour of our home. He also showed Spencer how to look outside and what cool things sit in hi front porch.

Catch me if you can
Our home is a traditional San Francisco flat, which means our apartment consists of one very long hallway. This hallway connects the front family room and kitchen with our bedrooms in the back. Eric has hours of entertainment in this hallway from the pictures on the walls to the window where he looks out and flirts with the college girls hanging out in their backyard studying.
He also finds this hallway the perfect straight-away for a good game of chase....
....and he's off

......a quick shoulder check to see if he is actually being chased

.....ha, you can't catch me. Now watch me bee-line straight for the non-secured office.

Hot off the presses
We just witnessed Eric take four to five full steps all on his own. Mom & Dad were both watching with curbed anticipation as he stood up and went forward toward his toy box without even realizing what he had just accomplished. He is such a humble guy.

Ba Bib
Pulling objects out seems to be quite fun. He received fascinating Christmas from Uncle Mike & Aunt Susie that illustrates this concept perfectly, a fill-n-dump wagon fully loaded with blocks. We lovingly refer to it as the Dump and Load. Eric neither "fills" nor "loads". He is simply a dump and un-loader.
And in the case of bibs he chooses to empty the drawer....

Love, love, love
We started the new year out right with a play date with Spencer in Novato. The boys are much more mobile than past play dates so needless to say we were burning up the lunches we ate together, keeping in mind that most of the boys' lunches hit the floor rather than their mouths.
Eric's favorite thing to point out to us are lights. He loves lights. He loves the light in the kitchen, the hallway, his bedroom, the living room, and the bathroom. While we still had the Christmas lights going, he loved those too. He shows us the lights at least 1000 times each day, uses his whole hand to chester as if to say "ta da".
While Grandma Lorraine was here Eric got to go to the indoor mall for the first time, and yes, much to many's surprise, I reluctantly took the plastic rain tarp off the stroller so he could get a good look. Imagine the lights at the mall. He pointed his way through the mall and was particularly awe struck in the Swatch store where I was getting my retro Swatch collection repaired. They had TRACK LIGHTING. WOW. And, a mirror on the ceiling. Eric was beside himself with enthusiasm.
Eric's second favorite object to point out to us are trees. We stroll down the street and he points and grunts (which means "Look Mom") at each tree we pass by.
And his third favorite thing to point out to us are the birds. He can even spot a bird in the sky while we stand at the window looking over roof tops. His eagle eyes don't miss a thing.
He has figured out how to put two and two together and he is very clear when he has a preference for doing one thing or another. Grunting means look and "aaaaaahh" means "I want to do this" as he stands next to the stero pounding on the cabinet until we turn on the music.

Merry Christmas to All
You may think we are delinquent with out Christmas card but think again. It is all part of my plan to grace your physical mailboxes with New Year's cards that may also be Valentine's Day cards. Won't that be a refreshing winter surprise?
While this is Eric's second Christmas, it is the first Christmas that he really participated in the actions of pulling apart tissue paper and swimming through his brightly colored sea of toys.He has also become quite demanding of tunes insisting we open the cabinet doors and turn on music and in this case Christmas music.
Here is Eric helping Dad open his walk n'ride car that Maria gave Eric for Christmas. He loves it so much that he had a little tantrum when Dad was trying to get it all put together. Eric just couldn't wait to motor around the flat.
We spent Christmas at home in San Francisco and had a very cozy Christmas Eve and Day. The afternoon of Christmas eve took us to a park in P-town to play with the Grandma Linda, Grandpa Terry, and the Montoya gang. Cousin Sam showed Eric how to wif a ball and scoot around the park.
Christmas afternoon brought another gorgeous day so we grabbed the pack and a bottle and hit the new portion of the coastal trail. This is truly one of the most beautiful views, so beautiful you forget about the many stairs up and down. Eric loved pointing out all the birds to us.

Delisioso
Eric loves his graham crackers and is starting to prefer feeding himself versus Mom,Dad, or Maria spooning it in. He loves to feed us too.

Happy first year at home
Can you believe it has been one year since we brought Eric home from CPMC. He came to his new home on December 10th. We hold that dear. And can you believe it has been this long since I last updated his blog. I am full of excuses that I won't bore with.
I will start by giving you a little Holiday update. Halloween was celebrated at the Annual NICU Halloween Reunion party where we met up with Superman (Spencer)and Robin (Ryan). Eric was Batman but revealed his identity early on in the party by removing his mask/hat.

For Trick or Treater visits Eric opted to be Spiderman to show off his super spidey agility.

Eric gets around and grabs things in his reach with pinpoint accuracy. He is a top speed crawler and now uses is right foot in track start position to give himself an extra boost with each crawl forward.

Mom's birthday was in November and Eric and Dad helped me celebrate by making me a homemade strawberry birthday cake. Eric isn't eating cake yet but he has mastered all things meltably crunchy and loves to chomp them using is 4,make that 5, front teeth.

We celebrated Thanksgiving at home and Mom did up a good turkey with all the fixings while Eric and Dad to a hike through Golden Gate Park. Eric loves the view from the backpack and found that it can also be a nice place to take a nap.

Yummy turkey

Cheering
Blueberries in the park

Relaxing after cheering mom on during her celebratory run - Nike Women's Half Marathon. Eric and Dad were a great cheering squad and waiting for me at the finish line. Afterwards we enjoyed a nice picnic in the park. It was a gorgeous day

We are cheering Eric on has he learns to get around. How exciting it is for him to be able to simple go and get things. Exciting for his too, let me tell you. Eric is crawling all over, pulling to stand up to every shelf he can reach and has taken his first steps holding mom's hands and his push cart. He is a mover, will only sit still to read or watch his sing along signing time video. He loves to pull every book off the shelf one at a time investigating both the front and back cover before discarding it and pulling off the next discovery.
He loves to do this same activity with our CD collection which is behind clothes doors most of the time. But when see's that cabinet open he kicks in his turbo boosters and is pulling out CDs in a flash. His favorite CD case appears to be the Samples.
Photo to come after I catch up on downloading/uploading.

Doing a lot of stuff
Visit from our friend Mary. Thanks for the cool outfit Mary.

Hey Mom, look what I can do. Sitting up in my crib. Time to lower that mattress

Last month Eric had is NICU follow up at the Whitney Clinic. He checked out perfect except for not responding to his name. At home he responds to us and others all the time so we weren't worried. He knows his name, but if I were surrounded by all these new toys, a new face, and a new room I wouldn't be paying enought attention to respond to my name either.
Eric has two chompers and is working on some more as evidences by his need to chomp on everything including our toes. He is also quite active. Once he could sit up on his own his crawling up on all forms came with a top speed. We race down our long hallway daily. Then a few days later came pulling up to his knees and now he has been pulling up to standing for about 2 weeks. He is working on taking a little steps while inching his way around his little table. There have been a few head bonks but they don't seem to phase him.
He has decided that once he has gone to be it is a good time to practice standing. The only thing is he isn't quite sure how to sit back down to go to sleep. So we are working on that these days. If anyone knows and good tips we would all be greatly appreciative.
My favorite thing to do, read books with Dad

Give-me-the-camera photo while we sit in the grass watching the Blue Angels. Boy are they loud, glad I just woke up from my nap

Jamming at the San Francisco Hardly Simply Bluegrass Festival

Eric is definitely into seeing the sights and enjoys going out top (very) early dinners with Mom and Dad when there are few people in the restaurant. He loves to befriend the wait staff by flashing them look which each visit to our table. He looks at them as if to say "who are you, and where did you come from". Then he proceeds to grab at anything on the table within his reach including Dad's beer.
He is always flipping around to see what is in front of him, behind him, or above him and always zeros in on the birds in the sky. He got a kick out of the blue grass festival.
